The PlantStories project investigates the significance of rye and buckwheat to people in Northern Europe in the Middle Ages, from 1100 to 1600. The project investigates why these crops specifically became staples and how their cultivation and use were influenced not only by the environment, but also by cultural choices, traditions and societal change.
