Historic Route 66 runs roughly 2,400 miles from Chicago toward Los Angeles, crossing eight states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The road had its official beginnings in 1926, when the Bureau of Public Roads launched the country’s first federal highway system, and Route 66 brought together existing local, state, and national roads. The full route wasn’t completely paved until 1938.
