Venus' Strange Rotation Was Likely Triggered By a High Velocity Moon-Sized Impactor

New simulations suggest Venus’ extraordinarily slow retrograde rotation resulted from a high-angle collision with a moon-sized object roughly one-tenth its mass within the first 50 million years of planetary formation. The impact likely melted approximately 99 percent of Venus’ mantle.
