New CAR T treatment opens doors for kidney patients

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania used CAR T-cell therapy to help two highly sensitized kidney transplant patients receive previously incompatible donor kidneys. The clinical trial demonstrates that engineered immune cells can safely reduce harmful antibodies in patients who had spent years waiting without viable matches. Both patients experienced significant reductions in antibody levels and successfully received transplants without severe side effects.
