Nagoya University researchers found that the brain enzyme ST8Sia5L, thought to have a single function, builds a polysialic acid sugar chain on itself, is then secreted from the cell, and switches off, reactivating only when the sugar is removed. This reveals a previously unknown regulatory mechanism for brain molecules critical to development and neural function.
