New metamaterial guides vibrations along predefined paths

Researchers at ETH Zurich have structured a wafer-thin silicon membrane in such a manner that it can direct mechanical waves along specific paths. Such structures offer interesting opportunities for converting unwanted vibrations into usable energy or for processing mechanical signals.
