Background: Database Architectures When databases first emerged, there was no distinction between a ‘client’ and a ‘server’, the whole database just ran on a single computer. Somewhere in the 80s, Sybase was the first to introduce the concept of a database ‘server’ and a ‘client’ running on different computers. Ever since, it was just assumed that every database system used a client-server architecture along with a communication protocol to talk between those.
