Building Better Connections: The Story of Crossref's Metadata Development

Crossref is evolving its metadata schema based on member feedback and organizational priorities. Schema 5.4 introduced citation type labeling and version support, Schema 5.5 (coming soon) will expand contributor roles with CRediT support, and future versions (6.0+) will improve name structures, add contributor identifiers like ISNI and Wikidata, and introduce free-text statements for funding acknowledgments and ethics declarations.
