UC Berkeley School of Law implemented a restrictive AI policy prohibiting student use for brainstorming, drafting, and exam work, with limited carve-outs for professor opt-in and legal research. The policy contradicts empirical research showing AI use strengthens legal reasoning and ironically permits the AI application most prone to errors — case law research — while restricting lower-risk uses like summarization.
