Securing the ledger, one account type at a time Quantum computing changes the security assumptions behind many of today’s public-key cryptographic systems. Blockchains are especially exposed because accounts, transactions, and consensus messages all depend on public keys and digital signatures. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could derive certain private keys from their public keys and use them to forge signatures.
