Building an in-game economy is the part of a backend where mistakes cost real money, literally. A bug in matchmaking annoys players; a bug in commerce either charges someone and gives them nothing, or hands out items nobody paid for, and then you’re issuing refunds and explaining yourself to a platform holder. And “commerce” isn’t one thing: it’s virtual currencies, a catalog and store, real-money purchases validated across every platform’s storefront, entitlements that have to grant everywhere, and the harder edges most teams underestimate, player trading, fraud, and tax.
