“Leaderboards and social” bundles two jobs that pull in different directions. One is competitive ranking: leaderboards that stay fast and fair at scale, seasonal resets, tournaments with brackets and prizes, ways to show a player where they stand without dumping ten million rows on them. The other is the social graph: friends, presence, chat, guilds, the connective tissue that keeps players coming back for each other rather than the game.
